Introduction
In this conference, sustainable design is defined as:
1. Recognition of social issues caused by the modern civilization from a global perspective.
2. Planning and execution of their solutions through design, as well as redesigning social frameworks.
Ever since the end of 1990's, there has been a mass movement, driven by persuasion of environmental efficiency with an aid of technological innovation. Many professionals, including designers, went along with this flow, and developed and popularized products with environmental feasibility, also known as eco-products. But this movement did not solve the social issues and designers began to sense crisis that the achievement of sustainable society is hard to come by with this strategy. As its alternative path, we have been holding The International Conference of Design for Sustainability from 2006 to drive forward social innovations, along with the ongoing technological innovations.
Up until the last and 5th conference in late February 2011, people with various background have got together and discussed issues and cases of the sustainable society. The output of the discussion was put into practice as a trial, and we were at the stage of establishing a new framework with principles and visions.
Ten days after the 5th conference, we have experienced The Great Tohoku Earthquake on March 11, 2011.
Earthquake, tsunami, and the collapse of nuclear power plant -- we came to realize once again that our lives are merely a part of nature. By witnessing how our sickening modern civilization is laid out with unnatural and unstable infrastructure -- the incident made us realize that a system, which lacks a coherency with nature, is fragile and the society, which relies on such system, is unsustainable.
Ironically, through the incident, we also came to understand clearly that one of the criteria to reach sustainable society is to establish a lifestyle that harmonizes with nature.
With this realization, we now think that the vision for our lives, directions for our society and industry, or in another words, an approach to design better future, is concrete. Our target is in our mindset and it's the perspective of the world, where over 7 billion inhabitants of our planet, sharing and coexisting in one planet -- earth. We believe that the ideal model exists in Asia, especially the existing culture and lifestyle in the countries of Southeast Asia. With this background, the 6th conference's theme is set as, "Asian Sustainability".
Theme
Asian Sustainability
It has been believed that the consumption of resources and energy leads to economic growth. We must decouple this causal association, also known as modern civilization model, and create and implement a new value, which is based on nature and life in nature. The locality, diversity, culture, climate -- communities, industries, and lifestyles, emerged from these nature-driven factors, are the origin of sustainability and we believe its essence can be found in Asia. With four points below, we will try to analyze Asian sustainability and lifestyle that work harmoniously with nature.
Asian Culture and Climate
Grass-roots Innovation
Cause Business and Inclusive design
Resilient Reconstruction
